Describe the inquiry activity you will use for your informal assessment review. Explain what science practice(s) it will teach and how you plan to assess them. Use the template "EDC 484 S09 RJ04 - Assessing Inquiry".
In the middle school many daily lessons used some form of inquiry or student centered learning. Many times this was done as a whole class activity, other times as small groups, occasionally individually and other times a combination of the three. One example of this was the Electromagnet Lab that we did. To start of with students had gathered informal research on electromagnets and on circuits in general. The students had seen the magnetic effects and had built numerous circuits as well as simple electromagnets. We then lead a class brainstorm to determine which variables could be changed with the electromagnet that may affect strength. The students were then asked to decide what they would like to test and had to complete a procedure before beginning their testing. After all testing was done and all the date analyzed the class compiled it to see which variables had the largest effect. The students were able to decide on a problem, a method of testing it, and finally see the results in a more global scale, similar to how science works in the real world, all while ‘playing’ with wires and magnets.
